8. Regulated Members
8.1. Registration sub-categories
The regulated members registered nurse register has the following sub-categories
- Virtual Care
- Emergency
- Non-practicing former regulated members
8.2. Entitlements
- Every Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, and Certified Graduate Nurse is entitled to vote in elections for membership on Council.
- Every Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner is entitled to nominate and be nominated for office including Council.
- Virtual Care Nurse, Provisional, and Courtesy members may attend meetings of Council but are not entitled to vote in elections for Council.
8.3 Virtual Care – Registered Nurse
- The Virtual Care Sub-Category is established as a sub-category of registration in the Registered Nurse category of the Register.
- An applicant for registration as a regulated member on the Virtual Care Sub-Category – Registered Nurse register may be registered on the Virtual Care Sub-Category register if the applicant:
- is not a regulated member of the College,
- meets the requirements set out for registered nurses in sections 3, 8 or 9 of the Registered Nurses Profession Regulation, as the case may be, and
- meets the requirements set out in the Virtual Care Sub-Category policy approved by Council and published on the College’s website, as may be amended from time to time.
- Every regulated member registered on the Virtual Care Sub-Category – Registered Nurse register may practice only from a jurisdiction outside of Alberta.
8.4 Virtual Care– Nurse Practitioner
- The Virtual Care Sub-Category is established as a sub-category of registration in the Nurse Practitioner category of the Register.
- An applicant for registration as a regulated member on the Virtual Care Sub-Category – Nurse Practitioner register may be registered on the Virtual Care Sub-Category register if the applicant:
- is not a regulated member of the College,
- meets the requirements set out for nurse practitioners in sections 4, 8 or 9 of the Registered Nurses Profession Regulation, as the case may be, and
- meets the requirements set out in the Virtual Care Sub-Category policy approved by Council and published on the College’s website, as may be amended from time to time.
- Every regulated member registered on the Virtual Care Sub-Category – Nurse Practitioner register may practice only from a jurisdiction outside of Alberta.
8.5 Virtual Care – Certified Graduate Nurse
- The Virtual Care Sub-Category is established as a sub-category of registration in the Certified Graduate Nurse category of the Register.
- An applicant for registration as a regulated member on the Virtual Care Sub-Category – Certified Graduate Nurse register may be registered on the Virtual Care Sub-Category register if the applicant:
- is not a regulated member of the College,
- meets the requirements set out for certified graduate nurses in sections 5 or 8 of the Registered Nurses Profession Regulation, as the case may be, and
- meets the requirements set out in the Virtual Care Sub-Category policy approved by Council and published on the College’s website, as may be amended from time to time.
- Every regulated member registered on the Virtual Care Sub-Category – Certified Graduate Nurse register may practice only from a jurisdiction outside of Alberta.
8.6 Emergency
- The Emergency sub-Category of registration may be used at the discretion of the Registrar when the Chief Medical Officer of Health declares the existence of a public health emergency as defined in the Public Health Act.
- The Emergency Registration Sub-Category is established as a sub-category of registration in the Registered Nurse category and Nurse Practitioner category of the Register.
- With respect to the Emergency Registration Sub-Category, the Registrar:
- May establish an expedited process for registration;
- Has the discretion to waive or reduce application fees for applicants, and
- May waive the continuing competence requirements.
- Applicants for the Emergency Registration Sub-Category must:
- Have formerly been a regulated member of the College, and
- Meet the requirements for renewal of a practice permit set out in section 21 of the Registered Nurses Profession Regulation.
- Registration in the Emergency Registration Sub-Category is for a maximum term of three (3) months, which may be renewed once at the discretion of the Registrar.
8.7 Non-practicing Former Regulated Members
The College shall maintain a register for non-practicing former members with the rights, privileges and responsibilities of members on this register set out in the policies to come in effect on October 1, 2021.
