The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) exists to assure the Alberta public that registrants provide safe, competent, ethical nursing care and excellence in nursing practice. Fees cover the costs of this regulatory process.
All fees below do not include GST (GST #R106692643).
Base Fees
Practice permits represent an effectively regulated, advancing, and progressive profession. The permit fee is only collected once per registrant, per practice year. This fee structure is for permits between Oct. 1, 2022, and Sept. 30, 2023. The next practice year's fees will be announced in Spring 2023.
In addition to a permit, all registrants will purchase Core Services (which includes professional liability protection) from the Canadian Nurses Protective Society (CNPS).

Disciplinary Matters Costs
On a case-by-case basis, registrants may receive a fine for unprofessional conduct or to cover hearing costs. The CRNA publishes fines in the hearing decisions and disciplinary complaint resolution agreements.
Additional Fees
Applicants may need to pay additional fees dependent on their application pathway and the information they provided. Possible additional fees may include:
- Completing a criminal record check.
- Paying verification fees from another jurisdiction.
- Registering with Pearson VUE to write the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN).
- Registering with the exam provider to write a nurse practitioner exam.
- Taking an English proficiency test if required (Canadian English Language Benchmark Assessment for Nurses [CELBAN] or the International English Language Testing System [IELTS]).
- Registering with the Touchstone Institute to take the Alberta registered nurse assessment program (ARNAP) exam.
- Applying to and completing assigned courses from the bridge to Canadian nursing program at Mount Royal University.
- Applying to the University of Alberta workshop for internationally educated nurses.
- Applying to and completing the nursing refresher certificate of achievement from MacEwan University
- Completing any additional education that may be required.
